Travelling with a pet to Georgia, Armenia or Azerbaijan: turnkey documents

The South Caucasus is a popular choice for relocation or long trips with pets. The rules in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan differ, so preparation should be tailored to your specific destination country.

As a rule, bringing a cat or dog into the countries of the region requires proof of rabies vaccination and a veterinary certificate. Requirements for the microchip, vaccination timing and additional tests may vary depending on the country of entry.

Many people travel around the region by car, which means crossing several land borders. We do the microchip, vaccinations and certificate in one place — so that you can leave at short notice.

Preparation stages

Requirements depend on the destination country, the type of animal and the travel date. Please check transport conditions with your airline or transport company.

  1. 01

    Trip details

As a rule, we first confirm which country in the Caucasus you’re going to and when, and which documents your pet already has.

  2. 02

    Vaccination and microchip check

A valid rabies vaccination is often required; in many cases a microchip is also recommended or mandatory.

  3. 03

    Veterinary certificate

Before departure you need a veterinary certificate — we issue it ourselves.

  4. 04

    Document check

We cross-check the microchip number, vaccination dates and certificate entries, then hand the documents over to you.

Things to keep in mind

  • The requirements of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan do not fully match, so documents that suit one country should be checked again for another.
  • Land crossings between some countries in the region are limited or closed, which affects your choice of route when travelling with an animal.
  • A veterinary certificate is usually valid for a short time, so the date it is issued needs to be timed to the day you cross the border.
  • If you plan to travel on to the EU after the Caucasus, it makes sense to prepare the documents with EU requirements in mind from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Are the rules the same for Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan?
No, each country has its own requirements. They may be similar, but differences in the details are common, so we prepare the documents for the specific country you’re going to.
Can we drive with a dog from Georgia to Armenia?
People do make such trips. Before you travel, it’s worth finding out the entry requirements and whether there is veterinary control at the crossing — and we’ll prepare the veterinary documents ourselves.
Do we need an international pet passport?
In many cases the passport is a convenient proof of vaccinations and microchip, but crossing the border usually requires a veterinary certificate as well.
How much time should we allow to prepare for a trip to the Caucasus?
It depends on what has already been done: microchip, vaccinations, whether a titre test is needed. Either way, we plan the preparation so that you can leave at short notice, and we’ll show you the plan once you get in touch.
