Preparing your cat or dog for entry into Canada

For many families, Canada is where they’re relocating to — and the pet comes too. We take care of the veterinary procedures and documents and prepare everything at short notice.

The import of pets into Canada is overseen by the CFIA. For cats and dogs brought in as personal pets, the requirements usually concern rabies vaccination and supporting veterinary documents, and conditions may vary depending on the species and age of the animal.

Dogs travelling to Canada often fly with a connection in the USA. This is general information. We handle the procedures and paperwork so that you can leave at short notice.

Preparation stages

Requirements depend on the destination country, the type of animal and the travel date. Please check transport conditions with your airline or transport company.

  1. 01

    Getting the details

As a rule, we first confirm your animal’s species and age, how many pets are travelling and which documents they already have.

  2. 02

    Rabies vaccination check

A valid vaccination with documentary proof is often required. We check the existing record and, if necessary, vaccinate your pet ourselves.

  3. 03

    Veterinary documents

In some cases a veterinary certificate in the official format is required. We issue it as part of the preparation and check that all the details match.

  4. 04

    Handing over the documents

We cross-check the vaccination dates, microchip number and certificate entries, then hand over the ready package.

Things to keep in mind

  • Requirements may differ for cats and dogs, as well as for young and adult animals.
  • If you have a connection in the USA, US entry or transit rules may apply to your dog — this is worth checking separately.
  • For dogs brought in for resale or as part of a group, the rules are usually stricter than for a personal pet.
  • The vaccination record must be complete and legible, showing the date, the vaccine and your pet’s details. An incomplete record may raise questions on entry.

Frequently asked questions

Does a cat need a titre test to enter Canada?
In many cases a titre test is not required for entry into Canada. If your pet does need one, we’ll let you know as soon as you contact us and do it ourselves.
What if the vaccination was given at a different clinic?
Send us a photo of the passport page with that entry — we’ll check the dates, the vaccine and your pet’s details. If something is wrong, we’ll tell you and do whatever is missing ourselves.
Can we move with two pets at once?
Yes, that’s quite common. We carry out the procedures and prepare the documents for each animal, all in one place.
When should we start preparing for the move?
There’s no need to drag the preparation out: we prepare documents for Canada quickly. We’ll discuss specific dates once we know what your pet already has.
