Travelling to the Balkans with a pet: turnkey documents

The Balkans bring together countries with different rules: some are in the EU, others are not. We carry out the veterinary procedures and prepare the travel documents ourselves, in one place.

Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania — each of these countries sets its own requirements for bringing in animals, although many of them follow European approaches. Neighbouring Croatia, Slovenia, Greece and Bulgaria are EU members and apply EU rules.

It is worth checking the requirements of transit countries before you travel. This is general information. We carry out the procedures and prepare the documents in one place — so that you can leave at short notice.

Preparation stages

Requirements depend on the destination country, the type of animal and the travel date. Please check transport conditions with your airline or transport company.

  1. 01

    Getting the details

As a rule, we first confirm the destination country, the travel date, the species of animal and which documents it already has.

  2. 02

    Core requirements

All countries in the region usually require a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination given after microchipping.

  3. 03

    Titre test — if needed

Some countries may require a titre test. We will determine this as soon as you contact us and, if necessary, take the blood sample ourselves.

  4. 04

    Issuing the certificate

Before departure, a veterinary certificate for the first country of entry is usually needed — we issue it ourselves.

  5. 05

    Check and handover

Before handover, we cross-check the microchip and vaccination records against the certificate and give you the complete set of documents.

Things to keep in mind

  • On a road trip, your route may pass through both EU and non-EU countries, and document requirements at these borders often differ.
  • Returning to the EU after a stay in a non-EU Balkan country sometimes requires additional documents — for example, a titre test result.
  • The rules of different Balkan countries are similar but not identical; a certificate issued for one country is not always accepted in another.
  • Not every border crossing has veterinary control — it’s worth checking before you set off.

Frequently asked questions

Can we travel through several Balkan countries with one certificate?
Sometimes this is possible, but not always: the countries’ requirements differ. Tell us all the countries on your trip — we’ll prepare the veterinary documents with this in mind.
Do we need a titre test if we are going to Montenegro?
It depends on several factors, including whether you plan to travel on to the EU afterwards. We’ll tell you whether the test is needed once you get in touch and, if necessary, do it ourselves.
How do we plan a road trip around the region?
You choose the route and border crossings — check which of them have veterinary control. We’ll prepare the veterinary documents for the trip.
