Taking your pet to the UK: preparation steps and what to check

The UK is known for its strict approach to bringing in animals, and its requirements differ from the EU’s in the details. We take care of the veterinary side and put together the complete set of documents at short notice.

After leaving the European Union, the UK kept its own rules for bringing in pets. The logic is similar to the EU’s — microchip, rabies vaccination, certificate — but there are notable differences that are easy to miss without experience.

Logistics are a separate topic: bringing pets into the UK is often tied to specific arrival routes. This is general information.

Preparation stages

Requirements depend on the destination country, the type of animal and the travel date. Please check transport conditions with your airline or transport company.

  1. 01

    Microchip and rabies vaccination

A microchip and a vaccination given after microchipping are usually required. We do both ourselves.

  2. 02

    Titre test — if needed

A rabies antibody titre test is not needed in every case. We’ll establish this straight away and, if necessary, take the blood sample ourselves and send it to the laboratory.

  3. 03

    Tapeworm treatment for dogs

Dogs usually need to be treated by a vet within a strictly defined window before arrival, and the treatment recorded in the documents. Getting the timing right matters.

  4. 04

    Certificate and final check

Before departure you need a veterinary certificate — we issue it ourselves and check all the dates and entries.

Things to keep in mind

  • For dogs, treatment against the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm is usually mandatory and must be given within a strictly defined window before arrival.
  • A titre test is not always required: it’s needed in some cases and usually not in others.
  • The UK bans or restricts certain dog breeds and their crosses — it’s worth checking this before you start preparing.
  • The microchip, vaccination and treatment details must match across all documents: a discrepancy in even one date can raise questions at the border.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents do we need to enter the UK?
As a rule, proof of microchipping and rabies vaccination, a veterinary certificate in the official format and, for dogs, a record of tapeworm treatment. We’ll tell you the exact set for your pet once you get in touch and prepare everything ourselves.
Why does a dog need worming treatment before entry?
The UK aims to prevent the introduction of a particular species of tapeworm. That’s why dogs usually need to be treated within a set period before arrival, with the treatment recorded by a vet in the documents.
Do cats need the same treatment?
This requirement usually applies to dogs. However, rules can change, so it’s best to check the current requirements with official sources.
What if we travel via an EU country?
In that case, both the transit country’s rules and the UK requirements may apply.
